Getting What You Don’t Deserve

 July 7, 2020

Sometimes when I am in the midst of hard times, I tell myself, “You deserve better than this, Jonathan.” But is that true? What do we really deserve? Hebrews chapter 8 discusses the difference between the covenant of the Old Testament and the New Covenant that God gave man when he sent Jesus to redeem us.

The covenant God made with man in the Old Testament ensured that they got what they deserved. One was required to be perfect in the law. What I find interesting about that covenant is that despite man’s continuous flaws, God still fulfilled every promise he gave them.

What do you really deserve?

“The wages of sin is death.”

I don’t think I can say it better than that. Like it or not, we live in a world created by a God who designed a system of choice. In that system of choice, we can choose life or death. When we sin, we often lose sight of the consequence of death. Since God is without sin, we are not able to occupy the same eternity with him when we have sin. Therefore, we must die to our sin.

Luckily, after Jesus came to town, he gave us a better way to cope with our mistakes and instead of getting what we deserve, we get what we don’t deserve. We now have the opportunity to remove sin from our life with believing in him. Before, there were many hurdles to jump through.

Real life application

So, what does this mean to us today? We have never lived under the law of Moses and God’s covenant ensures that we are free of getting what we deserve as long as we are hungry and thirsty after him. That is my advice to you today. Hebrews tells us of the old law to point out we are not capable of being perfect. Embrace that love and forgiveness and live your life in pursuit of Jesus.

In my personal life, I do this with a habit of talking to God and reading his Word. I remove the stress of being perfect. Ideally if you are seeking a relationship with God then you will want to be more like him. The more you are like him the less you will sin. A very simple formula. We just need to get off of our butts and make it happen.
