Interview me about 20 years ago and you will find a frustrated man who blames life for his circumstances instead of the choices he makes. Whether its was my financial problems, my grades at school, my lack of good relationships or my frustrations with my roommates, I blamed the world around me.
It seemed as nothing would go right for me. I thought my heart was in a good place. I went to church and worked hard to pay for school, but after almost 2 years out of high school nothing seemed to be working for me. Remember the last post about self-talk, well yeah, that was in full force!
What I didn’t see until years dow the road is that not only did I blame everyone else for my problems, but I was angry. I don’t mean angry so I don’t socialize with people, I mean punch-holes-in-the-wall angry.
What’s different now?
Almost a decade after my time at Texas Tech, I found myself in Moscow, Idaho as a single dad of a child with special needs. She slept in the other room while I lay in a bathtub filled with hot water sobbing. I couldn’t take it any more.
I was tired.
The pattern hadn’t changed even though my circumstances had. Sure, good things happened in that time frame, but all I could see was the paint and suffering that life kept throwing at me. I was working 5 part-time jobs and trying to be a good Christian father, but around every corner was frustration and disappointment.
Then it all changed.
Right there in that tub I gave up. I gave up fighting and I gave up pretending I had all the answers. Most importantly, I gave up trying to make choices on my own.
Making the right choices makes all the difference
It is amazing how powerful our mind is. The power in one small choice can set your course on a direction that you never thought possible. That day when I made one choice it led to another choice. Then, another choice. Each time I didn’t pretend I had everything together. I asked questions and I sought wisdom from both books and people smarter than me.
Things didn’t change overnight, but now, another decade later, I don’t struggle with blaming life for my circumstances. I still experience challenges and deal with challenges that would floor most people, I know that I have the strength and wisdom to make the right choice.
Do you struggle with making choices that seem to take you in the wrong direction? Don’t let life take you to your knees before you stand up and admit that the ego is not in charge. Send me a message and I would love to walk you through this journey.
