Actions Speak Louder Than Words: What was That?

We’ve all heard that phrase before. Most will say that we know the truth that brews within someone based on their actions. But what does that mean? Prior to my departure from the Navy, I was given a direct order to take care of my daughter. Being that I was voluntarily a new single-father the order was not necessary, but the Navy had no guarantee.

Annoyed as I was, I understood the purpose of the order. See, no matter how much I promised to be the responsible man that I am, they had no proof of the future. In this section of Start With Why by Simon Sinek, he talks about how even though we are to focus on the Why, if our what doesn’t line up, then we are spewing lies.

How should our actions line up?

As Sinek has shown us in this book, many companies don’t have a problem with discovering their What. As a matter of fact, most businesses start with their What to decide if they have something to offer the market. The challenge, however, is how to ensure the product they are offering lines up with the companies why.

As a consumer, the only way to determine whether or not a company’s What lines up with their Why is by watching their actions. If a company professes to put the clients first and care about the bottom line, but then won’t budge on prices for their latest product, do they really have the clients best interest in mind? Think about that next time you buy from your favorite company. Do their actions line up with their professed Why?

Real life application

So what can we do about this in our personal life. The great thing about knowing your Why and applying it to your actions can be done even if you don’t own a small business or company. This principle can apply to our everyday life. Let’s put me under the microscope for a second. I profess to be a family man. I strongly believe that my number one value is in the protection and love of my family. If I am found out at a bar on a Tuesday night getting drunk while my wife is running her business and four kids are driving her crazy, am I true to my Why?

I must definitely say not. One last note on this topic. The fastest way to lose the confidence in those that believe in you is for your actions to not line up with what you say you believe in. Don’t even think for a second that you will obtain loyal followers by this same behavior. Your Why, How, and What are directly tied together and neglecting any of the three will be detrimental.
